Study Revealing Sex-Specific Benefits of Stem Cell-Derived Stroke Therapy

Yan Li, PhD, a professor at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, co-authored a study published in Theranostics demonstrating that stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) may provide sex-specific benefits in ischemic stroke recovery. Working alongside researchers at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (MagLab), the team found that EV treatments augmented the protective effects of natural female sex hormones, leading to faster brain tissue recovery and metabolic restoration. Dr. Li emphasizes that utilizing the body’s natural biological messaging system through EVs could transform treatment approaches for challenging neurological conditions and advance personalized, sex-aware therapeutic strategies.
