WHO Expert Group on Estimating Industrially Produced TFA in Foods with Mixed TFA Sources

The World Health Organization (WHO) is establishing an Expert Group to review data collected through WHO's global call for data on the fatty acid composition of bovine milk and to provide advice on a suitable approach for estimating industrially produced trans-fatty acid (IP-TFA) content in foods containing mixed trans-fatty acid (TFA) sources.

No universally accepted laboratory method currently exists to directly distinguish IP-TFA from naturally occurring ruminant TFA (R-TFA) in foods where both are present. Building on a decision-tree/conversion-factor approach previously proposed by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre, and on a 2024 WHO roundtable that identified the need to test its global applicability, WHO collected fatty acid composition data on bovine milk from countries worldwide. The Expert Group will review this evidence base and advise WHO on a scientifically robust and practically feasible approach for estimating IP-TFA content for use in monitoring compliance with TFA policies.

WHO is seeking experts with experience in analytical/lipid chemistry (including GC-based fatty acid analysis), dairy science, food chemistry, nutrition science and risk assessment, food regulatory science and policy, and biostatistics/data science.

This forum is a standing body of experts engaged in conversations to surface and highlight issues critical to the security and resiliency of the U.S. cyber ecosystem. Experts are needed in the areas of cybersecurity, cryptography, privacy, AI/ML security, economics and incentives, law and policy frameworks for security, industrial and enterprise security, and threats and vulnerability. Submissions will be collected on a rolling basis via the online form through December 31.
